ACARYA VASUBANDHU - AN INDIAN GURU (316-396), Tibet, 19th ct. Tempera and gold on cotton, original silk-satin mounting with golden embroidery. Shown here is a scene of collective debate, a Buddhist practice of long tradition involving certain rules about the formation of groups, one challenger and one defendant as well as one neutral party. Both parties meet to discuss a certain text using a certain choreography. Vasubandhu, whose main work is the Abhidharmakosha, a six hundred verse synopsis of the philosophy of the Sarvastivadin. He established social practice as the ideal of compassion of the Mahayana, founded hospitals, hostels, and schools, and later taught at the monastic university Nalanda. He died at the age of 80 years.
