TÖNPA SHENRAB IN THE FORM OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI - BON TRADITION, Tibet, 19th ct. Following the description of an episode in which Tönpa Shenrab looked after the privileged and thus started the Bon tradition, showing him in the form of Buddha, seated on a lotus altar, above a moon disc, surrounded by an aura and adorned with allegoric animal depictions of a ruler of worlds. Also shown are the deity Shenla Wökar in white as well as six manifestations of the Buddhas of the Wheel of Reincarnations, here shown in their equivalents as the crowned bodhisattvas. The upper left corner shows a Bon priest, probably gshen ston nam mkha' rgyal mtshan zhabs - "the honourable Shentön Namkha Gyaltsen". He is wearing the traditional hat of the Bön-Po, holding a manuscript in his left hand, the right hand showing the mudra of reasoning. Opposite him is a Tertön (treasure finder), by inscription of the name phun tshogs bstan 'dzin rnam rgyal mchog - "the highest Phüntsog Tenzin Namgyal."
