Description

Very Fine Chinese Qing Dynasty carved Jade vase adorned with Fu-bat facade and phoenix handles. Voluptuous double-gourd cavity drifts upward into a feminine neck eventually meeting domed lid and free-ring finial. Mirrored phoenix head handles are appended on either side of the neck with slender U-shaped grips. Suspended free rings hang around each holder. The mystical Phoenix resembles the emperor, empress, marital bliss, or a happy reunion. Soaring Fu-bats glide through undulating clouds that ensconces this outer surface. Fu can mean prosperity and good fortune which is why the bat has become a symbol for good luck. The nephrite has mottled appearance with scattered inclusions along with a beautiful transparent chalk-white tone. Note: Jade, as a stone, has five virtues. Its glossiness and warmth is like benevolence. Because inside and outside is the same, so that knowing the outside one knows the inside, this may be likened to righteousness. Its far-reaching sound (when struck) may be heard from afar, like wisdom. It is not easily bent, but can be broken, which may be likened to courage. Jade can be sharpened, but not to the point where it can injure people; this quality is like self-regulation or restraint.
