Jade effigy of Fu-dog and Lingzhi (fungus), resting on hardwood stand. The large Fu-dog is in a relaxing position on its four legs while the head faces over the right shoulder. The Fu-dogs jowls clench a Lingzhi branch, with young Fu-dog curled up beside it. The dog is a symbol of future prosperity. Lingzhi is known as the fungus of immortality, considered by the Daoist mystics as the nourishment of the Immortals (Xian). It was believed that Lingzhi funguses grew in the dwellings of the Immortals and that whoever consumed the hallowed fungus achieved immortality. The jade has a grayish-celadon color with sparse golden-russet inclusions. The outer surface has a moist-milky appearance and glistens when stuck by light. Displayed on a carved hardwood stand. Note: Jade, as a stone, has five virtues. Its glossiness and warmth is like benevolence. Because inside and outside is the same, so that knowing the outside one knows the inside, this may be likened to righteousness. Its far-reaching sound (when struck) may be heard from afar, like wisdom. It is not easily bent, but can be broken, which may be likened to courage. Jade can be sharpened, but not to the point where it can injure people; this quality is like self-regulation or restraint.
