Chinese porcelain water pot potted in a bell shaped body, rounded shoulder terminating the short prominent neck toward banded rim, raised on a flat base. The exterior decorated with carmine red underglaze of stylized rooster, bordered with bands of interlocking meander under the rim, and foot, all sets against plain white underglaze ground. The rooster or cock is one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Roosters are believed to be able to scare away demons. The Chinese for rooster (gongji) is pronounced the same as lucky or auspicious (ji). Mark on base, six blue underglazed script -KaiShu- characters, enclosed by double fine blue rings, YongZheng Reign Period of Great Qing Dynasty.
