Early Mandalay Period Standing Wooden Lacquered Buddha with Inlaid Glass and Mirrors, arms C. 1860-1870. This type Buddha image epitomizes the Burmese representation of the Buddha with a broad band across the forehead, hair that hugs the head in tight curls and covers a broad prominent ushnisha without a lotus finial above. The uttarasanga (robe) is worm in the open mode and is folded decoratively over the left shoulder, covering the arms and chest and held at each side of the lower body by downward-stretched hands. Below, at its lower centre, appears the antaravasaka, covering the body from the waist to the knees. In his right hand the Buddha holds the medicinal myrobalan fruit. Early Mandalay Period, c. 1860. 59 inches
