Early to Mid 20th century Ashanti Akua 'ba painted wood maternity figure on wood base, 17.5"h. According to legend, Akua, a barren women went to the local Shaman for advice to help her conceive a child. She was given a wooden figure with a larger round head and was told to carry it on her back as if it was her child. She soon became pregnant and the legend was born.Provenance: Deaccession from Crocker Art Museum, donated by Scott McC ue, 12/28/10
