UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI (1798 - 1861). Woodblock prints, oban triptych, depicting the warrior Minamoto no Raiko and his retainers about to slay the drunken ogre, Shuten-doji, in his lair at Mt. Oe, signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi with the publisher’s seal, Amatsu. (3) Provenance: A private European collection. 錦絵 国芳 According to the legend, the great warrior, Raiko was sent by the emperor to destroy the man-eating demon, Shuten-doji, who abducted many young women from the city of Kyoto. Raiko disguised as mountain priest offered Shuten-doji the magic sake, which made the demon incapacitated from fighting against the warriors.
