Multi-Gemstone Carving--"The Goldminer"


By Aleksandr LeverovIn keeping with the "character" figures frequently seen in the Russian Lapidary Arts, this figure of a goldminer has been rendered using a variety of Russian minerals. His shirt is carved from granite with a border and elbow patch of bright blue Afghani Lapis Lazuli; the rucksack of green jasper, the bucket of pyrite, the pick axe and tool handles of brown jasper. A variety of other minerals are used such as Limesite, Dolerite, Quartzite, Scarn, Ophiocalcite, Pyrite, Petrified Wood, Jaspelite. He scratches his head in wonderment over his new discoveries of gold which are formed of milky white quartz overlaid in gold leaf. With a twisted copper wire belt and ties on his boots and rucksack.
