Ca. 19th century Burmese Shwe Zawa lacquerware Medicine box. The medicine box is comprised of thirteen compartments. A large central and twelve smaller compartments. The central compartment is covered by a kneeling monk. Each of the smaller outer compartments are topped by an individual and unique Nat spirit, carved from teak wood and coated in gold gilt. The box itself is decorated with a traditional Burmese motif depicting elephants, nats, traditional village life etc utilising the traditional black and gold, shwe zawa gold gilt style. The figures can be removed to reveal a hollow tube, used to store herbs, spices and traditional medicines. Each of the Nats are posed in different positions and appear complete, with no damage. The delicacy of the carving and gilt work on this piece are excellent. Overall the piece is in great condition. A rare and wonderful piece. Please contact us for high resolution images of the piece.
