A VERY RARE DOULTON LAMBETH STONEWARE SCOTCH WHISKY FLASK, circa 1884, of globular form with a slender neck and strap handle, the front applied with the 'Galley of Lorne' in full sail, within a circular cartouche with beaded and stiff-leaf borders, against a formal geometric and foliate band, titled 'GREENLEES BROTHERS' to the sides and 'SPECIAL / HIGHLAND WHISKY', glazed in shades of brown, green and blue against a mottled blue-green ground, 18cm high, impressed 'DOULTON LAMBETH' factory mark and 'Rd No 4818', various impressed letters and numeralsLiterature: Two larger versions of this flask, but with silver mounts, are illustrated by Alan Blakeman & Paul Bloomfield, 'Whisky Galore' (2010), p.87, cat.B233, who state that the 'Galley of Lorne' advertising version exists in three sizes (6, 7.25 and 9 inches high). The flask in the present lot, at around 7.25 inches high, is the medium size.
