A FINE ENGRAVED GLASS EWER, circa 1870, Scottish or Stourbridge, of urn-shaped form with a strap handle, decorated to one side with Eos, Greek goddess of the dawn, the winged female figure standing upon a chariot drawn by two horses, a crop in her right hand, the reverse with a large palmette flanked by flowers, all above a Greek key border, the shoulder with a band of anthemians, raised on a star-cut foot, 31cm higLiterature: Ewers such as this were copper-wheel engraved on a relatively small scale in Britain during the 1860's to 1880's, mostly by Bohemian craftsmen who adopted the classical style. They were mainly produced in Stourbridge, London and Edinburgh. A pair of decanters of similar form and with comparable decoration was sold by Bonhams Edinburgh, 2 December 2004, lot 149.
