胡文明，明万历年间（1573-1620）铸铜工艺名匠，云间人，根据明人《云间杂志》记载，胡文明擅长铸铜炉与文房器具，按古式制彝、鼎、尊、卣之属极精，价亦甚高，誓不传他姓；时礼帖称“胡炉”，后亦珍之。此件铜炉即属华而不俗的文人趣味之作，整器包浆丰厚、自然，沉重压手，藏用得当，保存完好，乃文房清供之雅器。
