古代铜炉形制依“天圆地方”之传统观念而制，其中又以取“天圆”者多，取“地方”者少。马槽炉炉形刚正方圆，仪规森然，乃正仪之器，历来受文人雅士追捧。
此炉铜质精良，沉稳凝练，手感沉坠，叩之金声玉振；皮色莹煌，于沉稳之气韵中透出灵动之美感，彰显出古代士大夫文人的尚雅之风。底款为“琴友”刻款，更为明确地表达了其文人属性。
