A pair of good mahogany elbow chairs, by William Bertram & Son, London, late 19th century, in the Hepplewhite style, the dished oval backs with stylised scrolling feathers within carved husk frames over carved outscrolled arms, over-stuffed seats and fluted and carved legs, one chair impressed 'Bertram & Son, Dean St, Oxford St, W' and with Bertram & Son paper label, impressed '0742' and '01544' (2) The firm of William Bertram & Son were established in 1830 and traded in Dean Street from 1839. They were both retailers and cabinetmakers specialising principally in brass inlaid and marquetry furniture. Literature: C Gilbert ed.
