A TERRACOTTA SOKOTO HEAD, NIGERIA Circa 500 B.C. - 200 A.D. With typical heavy brow and small hollow eyes, the long nose, with flared nostrils, surmounts the small linear mouth, the protruding beard juts out above the long thick neck, adorned with a collar, 34cm high. Provenance: Property of an important private UK estate. Footnotes: So named because of the city near which this type of baked terracotta sculpture was first found, heads of this type are depicted with typical traits that are seen in most examples. Characteristics of such Sokoto heads include a heavy brow, small slit eyes and a short wide nose.
