A DEPICTION OF IMAM ALI'S WHITE HORSE DULDUL Lucknow or Delhi, Northern India, late 19th - 20th century Opaque pigments, black ink and gold leaf on paper, the horizontal composition depicting Duldul, AliÂs white horse, wearing a gold harness and a highly ornate saddle bag, possibly inspired by motifs circulating on 19th-century Russian lithographs, the hand of Abbas emerging on the horse's back and placed under a caparisoned parasol, the horse standing in a lush flowery field surrounded by a stream and hills, the landscape typical of the Lucknow school of paintings, the inscription on the upper right corner an invocation to Ali reading Oh Ali, ease my difficulties, give me relief from the prison of intense sadness and sorrow, mounted, glazed and framed, 25.5cm x 30cm excluding the frame.
