A rare terracotta bust by William John Coffee dated 1814, of a gentleman wearing 18th century dress, with short hair and sideburns, his head slightly turned and looking to the right, signed 'W J Coffee Fecit Derby 1814', raised on a polished black hardstone base, 25cm. William Coffee (1774-1846) was an English artist and sculptor of some renown who started his career working for William Duesbury at Derby. During this time he produced a series of busts like this one of local landowners and dignitaries. He emigrated to American in 1816, where he became famous as a sculptor of Thomas Jefferson, among others.
