Paint-decorated Pine Box with Drawer, attributed to Robert Crosman, Taunton, Massachusetts, c. 1727, the molded lift top opens to a well, on a dovetail-constructed box with applied single-arch molding and a drawer, all on a flat base with rounded edge, the box with red/brown-painted ground, the front initialed "IP" within a white wavy lined panel with a lead escutcheon; two free-standing red and white birds flank a V-shaped vine with scrolling stems, red berries, and flowers, original surface, (paint wear, one drawer knob broken off), ht. 10, wd. 16, dp. 9 in. Literature: The Magazine Antiques, April 1933, "The Tantalizing Chests of Taunton," by Esther Stevens Frazier [an early researcher on painted furniture], pp. 135-36, fig. 5, illustrated. The author suggests the possibility that the initials "IP" are for Jerusha Pineo.
