Trofeo remiero " Coppa Principe di Piemonte " Bronzo fuso e cesellato, Argento sbalzato, smalti policromi e marmo. ,
Italy fourth decade of the twentieth century, h cm 48, 5 (figure including base, total h cm 65.5) The sculptural group, depicting a rower who, naked, holds an oar in the act of rising victoriously from the waves, is stylistically inspired by the sculptures of the Stadio dei Marmi in the complex of the Foro Italico in Rome symbolizing, in a sort of "formal rhetoric", physical strength and ethics. On the front of the plinth base there is a plaque engraved with the inscription "Coppa Principe di Piemonte" and the coats of arms of the House of Savoy and the city of Verbania, born in 1939 from the union of Intra and Pallanza. On the sides painted with polychrome enamels are the Borromean Islands and two boats on the lake. Numerous applied plaques recall some of the rowing clubs that won the trophy. The beautiful sculptural composition, most likely donated by Prince Umberto di Savoia (1904-1983), underlines the importance that Lake Maggiore had in the history of Italian rowing, also symbolized by the words of Gabriele D'Annunzio that the Vate dedicated at the end of the 1920's to a victory of the oar of the Società Canottieri Pallanza: "I was already very moved to see the oar of MIA Pallanza win the very difficult race with exemplary skill; but your affectionate word touches me even more deeply. I think back to the distant years when I was more assiduous among the rowers of Verbano. I think back that I had promised my HEAD to come and embrace him again by going down to the lake with my seaplane. Faster than my wing was Death. Embrace the winners for me, and let them be well trained to win in the future trial."
