OKIMONO MONOXYLE CARVED IN THE EFFIGY OF ONI NEMBUTSU
Japan, Meiji / Taisho
Sculpture cut from a single piece of wood. The demon is represented sitting, the left leg bent in front, the right leg crossed, also in front. He holds in his right hand a mallet with which he strikes a bell; in his left hand a register of donors. He is marked both by his expressive face with dilated golden pupils and sharp fangs and by his terrifying character, which is reinforced by his protruding ribs and short horns.
