Conrad Marca-Relli, American 1913-2000- Untitled, late 1970s; mixed media and collage on canvas laid down on board, signed, 47x58.5cm Provenance: Acquired by the current owner from New York art collector who was friends with the artist Note: This work is registered with the Archivio Marca-Relli, Parma, as archive number MARE-6221 / © Archivio Marca-Relli, Parma Conrad Marca-Relli belonged to an early generation of the New York school of Abstract Expressionists. He first exhibited these works in a 1951 exhibition curated by Leo Castelli (1907-1999) called Ninth Street Show, which was arguably the most comprehensive show of Abstract Expressionism of its time. During a trip to Mexico in 1953, Marca-Relli began experimenting with collage due to a lack of his typical art materials. Marca-Relli incorporated only the most essential elements to create a painting. While his early collages were rendered in a subdued palette of grays and whites, Marca-Relli later began a series of large-scale collages in the late 1950s, introducing bold colours that would expand outwards to convey intense movement. The oscillation between figuration and abstraction, in this unique medium, was at the principle of Marca-Relli’s practice. Marca-Relli’s works can be found in following collections Guggenheim, Whitney Museum, New York and Museum of Modern Art, New York. Please refer to department for condition report
