PROVENANCE: From Private collections of Mr. Peter Lyon (1938-2016), After graduation in 1959 he joined the military and was trained as a fighter pilot for the Marine corp. Retiring from the military his next career was as a commercial pilot for Pan American and United Airlines flying 747 aircraft in the pacific and orient. During his layovers he searched for fine porcelains which he proudly added to his private collection. A portion of his collection is being sold at auction to benefit his charitable interests. Dimensions: 17-1/2" H x 13-1/4" Dia. Stand: 2-3/4" H Very Rare, Chinese Ming Dynasty Period, famous blue and white dragon reward vase on stand. The finest porcelain potted in reward shape vase, thick and tall, globular lower body, tapered gracefully toward straight tall cylindrical neck, with straight mouth rim, raised on a short small round foot base with slight concave. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white underglazed base color which contrast against the cobalt blue fine color, depicted of snarling huge imperial five claws dragon careening through cumulus clouds above thrashing Li-shui waves in a dark blue color dragon squama to chasing flaming pearl amidst flames and vapors, enclosed with scrolling interlocking tendril. Dragon is the symbol of the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fecundity, the Li-shui wave pattern which is known to be the abode of dragons. Elegantly and smooth presented upon a carved zitan hardwood stand with archaic ruyi pattern, created Majestic vase. Blue and white porcelain in Chinese it is called Qing Hua Ci. It is the most important variety of China’s porcelain. It was originated in the Yuan Dynasty. Its color does not easily fade and durability is longer. It used cabaltous oxide as the colorant. Patterns were directly painted onto the inner body and burnt after glaze was applied on it. The porcelain conformed all required specimen to be high valued Chinese porcelain wares, with finest material, the whiteness, the glaze, and the carving.
