The Penitent Magdalene oil on canvas 64 x 49 cm Footnote: The present lot is after Guercino's 'Maddalena Penitente' now known only through a copy in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Capodimonte, Naples. Condition report: Oil on canvas which appears to be unlined. The canvas tension is adequate but there are general undulations across the surface. Where the paint layer is cracked it is pulling the canvas out of plane. There are a few small holes and tears in the canvas. The paint layer has a network of age cracks, some quite prominent, but overall it is in a stable condition. The painting is compromised by an old degraded varnish layer which has yellowed with age. Where the varnish has pooled it appears darker yellow and patchy. The white areas following cracks at the top of the painting are actually old dirt and varnish rather than losses. The painting would greatly benefit from being cleaned.
