LEOPOLD SURVAGE (FRENCH 1879-1968) Porteuse de Collioure, 1927 oil on canvas 65 x 53.7 cm (25 1/2 x 21 1/8 in.) signed and dated lower right; with several exhibition labels and illegible stamps on verso EXHIBITED Galerie Lucie Weill, Paris, May, 1965 (label on verso) Musee Galliera, Paris, Survage: exposition retrospective, April 6-May 2, 1966, no. 49 (label missing but referenced in Brosset certificate) EXPERTISE Accompanied by a copy of a photo-certificate of authenticity issued by Eric Brosset, Paris, 2011, confirming that the painting will be included in the Survage catalogue raisonne in preparation. (Copy available upon request) A stylistic analysis report by Mikhail German, Saint Petersburg, 2012. (Copy available upon request) LOT NOTES Moving to Nice after sharing a studio with Modigliani in Paris after 1917, Leopold Survage's style changed dramatically from his more cubist and geometric compositions, to neo-classical forms and natural subjects, especially after 1922. The current lot is a pristine example of Survage's neo-classical period, with bold lines and forms, depicting a simple Catalan village woman with a stately primitivism. CONDITION Observed in frame, the work is in overall very good condition. Overall surface dirt; would benefit from a light cleaning. Fine, stable and age-appropriate craquelure apparent overall. Inspection under UV light shows retouching to perhaps 15% of the overall painting surface, mainly around the head, with some to the cheek. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Please note that any condition statement regarding works of art is given as a courtesy to our clients in order to assist them in assessing the condition. The report is a genuine opinion held by Shapiro Auctions and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report or a photograph does not preclude the absence of defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others.
