A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE FIERY ASCENT OF THE PROPHET ELIJAH, YAROSLAVL SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY the central register depicting the prophet Elijah holding a walking stick, seated in a desert landscape along the river Jordan, being fed by a raven, the upper register showing Elijah ascending to heaven in a fiery chariot, holding out his mantle to his disciple Elisha, looking back to Elijah and Elisha praying after Elijah is awoken by an angel, with interior life scenes flanking the central register, egg tempera and gesso on wood panel, two insert splints on the back; dimensions: 67 x 57 cm (26 3/8 x 22 1/2 in.) LOT NOTES The iconography and style of the present lot is closely related to an icon now at the Yaroslavl State Historical-Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve. CONDITION The icon is in overall very good age-appropriate condition. Fine and stable craquelure overall. Bulging to a 2 x 3 cm area at the upper right, as apparent in photographs. Retouching to the upper center left, at a vertical crack in the panel, and scattered parts of the sky. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale.
