CARLOS MERIDA (GUATEMALAN 1895-1984) Abstract (Three People), 1958 oil on masonite 40.64 x 30.48 cm (16 x 12 in.) signed lower center PROVENANCE Private Collection, Florida LOT NOTES This painting includes hints of simplified figuration abstracted by geometric structures. Here the artist's strong use of colors and outlines mirror the aesthetic of a mosaic or stained glass window. While living in Paris and then Mexico in the early 1900s the Merida befriended such artists as Picasso and Diego Rivera, Paul Klee and Joan Miro. These connections compelled his style to evolve toward non figurative representation, of which he is best recognized. CONDITION Observed in frame, the work appears in very good condition: the colors vibrant, the media layer stable. Inspection under UV light shows two diagonal lines of variant fluorescence at the center of the left edge. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Please note that any condition statement regarding works of art is given as a courtesy to our clients in order to assist them in assessing the condition. The report is a genuine opinion held by Shapiro Auctions and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report or a photograph does not preclude the absence of defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others.
