A BRONZE HANDLED AND SPOUTED GLOBULAR EWER, HE
China, Han dynasty
Standing on three legs, the snake-shaped spout, the handle adorned with an animal head, the flat circular lid with a small handle decorated with a band of stylized motifs.
14,5 x 21 cm
Provenance : Fabrizio Savi collection, acquired from Anthony J. Allen, Auckland, New Zealand, between 1995 and 2000.
The handle has a hole for a wooden extension to keep the hand farther from the fire. Usually associated with preparing alcohol-based decoctions of cereals, it is however very likely that these containers served to heat the water for the ablutions, since in tomb contexts they were found together with other water containers.
