The Gui form area decorated with a string of circular carved elements to represent a star constellation. The lower portion showing the Gui rising from waves below, the circular Bi form design embellished with raised carved circular points known as the grain pattern. The whole surmounted with a entwined dragon centering the top of the design.
Provenance; A New York Collector Lot Notes: This particular design is very rare and showcases a design which at the time made represents an allusion to the greatest elements of scholarship, namely an understanding of ritual, history and astronomy. It is believed that some notched jades with protrusions to one side are formed to be used to observe the sky (according to ancient text). The star constellation observed engraved here is believed to be "The Emperor's Parasol" which relates to the western constellation known as the big dipper. What significance this constellation had for the Ancient Chinese people is unclear however the representation of this constellation is observed on many items including in lot.
