A Chinese jade "Su Wu" plaque, Qing Dynasty. Carved featuring Su Wu to one side, he is seen kneeling in a robe and carrying a staff, the reverse with calligraphy, both sides with upper portion showing sylized lingzhi designs. The calligraphy roughly translates to: "only gentleman Su possesses blood [in his] heart/mind", the whole carved from an attractive even celadon colored stone. Tied and suspended with a butterscotch amber bead.
Provenance: From A Montreal Collector.
Lot Notes: This plaque has a poem carved to one side, which is believed to be original in composition. This type of plaque was meant to inspire it's owner with a timeless message about Chinese history and designed to be tactile so it is enjoyable to be carried and played with.
<
Su was often regarded as the epitome of faithful service in light of great odds and trials. His story was often invoked when acts of great faith or courage were performed by officials. His story, as undetailed as it was in actual history, often became subjects of drama, poetry, and songs throughout Chinese history. Many people take him as a second Zhang Qian, who was also previously caught in the same situation, refused to surrender, and managed to escape back to Han China.>> -Wikipedia
