Carved to one side with a boy depicted in a whimsical pose and holding a ruyi scepter in his hand, this scene carved on a lower plane inside a cartouche recessed approx half a mm from the border framing the edge, to the reverse a rectangular cartouche in positive relief and carved with four positive relief Chinese characters "Bao He Tai He",

Provenance: From a Pennsylvania Collector. Lot Notes: The meaning is "for a scholar to be aloft and free high above all things", It is a quote from the book of changes. It is of note that an imperial jade seal was made during the reign of Emperor Kangxi bearing these same four characters, it is also worth noting that an additional jade seal was made with these same characters again during the reign of Qianlong. It is therefore clear that something about this verse was meant to inspire an emperor.
