Dimensions: 2" H x 11-1/4" Diam. Chinese Yuan Dynasty period, Blue and White double wind disk plate. Finely potted in shallow vessel form, with broad wide central interior, rounded cavetto gently tapering to open wide. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white underglaze base color which contrast against the cobalt-blue fine color. The central medallion delicately fine depicted coupe of flying phoenix trough scrolling ruyi clouds, enclosed with double fine blue rings lines. The Chinese phoenix is a mythical bird known as the Fenghuang in Chinese. The Chinese phoenix does not have the connotation of a bird rising from ashes. The Chinese phoenix symbolizes joy and peace. It is believed that the phoenix only makes an appearance during periods of prosperity, peace and good government. A dragon and phoenix shown together symbolize a happy and harmonious union. The phoenix is the yin equivalent of the dragon and is associated with the south and summer. The phoenix is also the symbol of the empress. The outer central medallion rim decorated with flowers blooms interspersed interlocking scrolling tendril and foliage. The mouth outer rim decorated with scrolling ruyi clouds. The exterior foot rim adorned with repeating geometrically pattern. The foot rim reveals the cut edges during the making process, and the base left unglazed with grayish creme-brown ground and dark spots of firing marks. The glaze is seamless and gives off a beautiful luster, with the colors maintaining excellent vibrancy. This piece displays a subtle sheen as the light ricochets across the finely exterior, glazed smooth, brilliant with a moist appearance, the finishing meticulous.
