Charles L. Taylor Autograph Letter Signed with Confederate Currency Content. Four pages of a bifolium, 5" x 8", New Berne, North Carolina; March 25, 1865. Addressed to his wife, Hattie, Taylor writes about an exchange of goods he made with a Confederate prisoner that had been brought to New Bern after the Battle of Bentonville. He gave the man a newspaper in exchange for Confederate currency. It was solely for the novelty of owning some, as by this point in the war Confederate currency was practically worthless. The letter reads in part: "... Some 1600 rebels, captured by Sherman, at his battle at Bentonsville I believe came to town...I went over to see them...this morning, they were in good condition physically, though with their rough clothing they looked rough....a good many...had plenty of the Confederate currency with them. I noticed one offering a $20 bill for 20 cents. I gave one a N.Y. paper...and afterward happened to think I would like a sample of Confederate money and went to the chap and told him so...he gave a $5 bill...the currency he would probably sell to curiosity seekers." Signed, "Chas. L. Taylor." With original transmittal envelope and $5 Confederate bill. Condition: Letter has lightly rubbed and toned creases with smooth mail folds. Currency has 1" open tear to bottom left corner and it rubbed and toned overall. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
