Charles L. Taylor Autograph Letter Signed with Battle of Fredericksburg Content. Four pages, 5.25" x 8.25", Fredericksburg, Virginia; December 15, 1862. Addressed to his wife, Hattie, by Charles L. Taylor of the 16th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. In this letter, he writes about his experience at the Battle of Fredericksburg and is accompanied with its original transmittal envelope. It reads in part: "Your letter mailed the 8th last was most gladly received this morn and finds us on picket duty supporting the 3rd. Mass Artillery Capt. Martin, 12 lb. Napoleon guns, six pieces and say about seven hundred yds from the rebel pickets west from the city and towards a mile from their works...how long we remain I can't tell, whether we are engaged I cannot tell, all is uncertain as is nearly everything for us engaged in the ranks connected with war. We must make up our mind for anything which may come and trust in providence...One of our Artillery pieces did not throw its shots well causing execution in our own ranks. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday the artillery was firing almost constantly firing keeping up a constant roar. Each gun firing balls or shells too. Making it a serious business...Saturday night we all thought we had got to go into the fight as we were marched along dark directly toward where it was going on, and we could hear the constant cracking of the riles and see the flashing of the firing from them so distinctly. Our force charging on a battery. They did not take it, though they lost no ground the firing at length ceases and we slept on our arms blankets over us." Signed, "Chas. L. Taylor." Condition: Lightly toned along creases. Two small dampstains near date. Smoothed mail folds. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
