Rolfe (Henry Leonidas) Studies of Fresh Water Fish, vignette title affixed onto original brown paper wrapper, the suite of 7 tinted lithographs on wove paper, mounted on stubs, each sheet approx. 355 x 540 mm (14 x 21 1/4 in), occasional surface dirt and browning throughout, several with careful repairs to old splits, half calf with red morroco label to upper cover, spine splitting with chips and loss, rubbing and scuffs to boards, worn, oblong folio, published by the Artist at his Studio, Shorter's Court, Throgmorton St., City, 1851; together with A Portfolio of Permanent Reproductions of Ten Fish Pictures After Paintings by the late celebrated Fish Painter H. L. Rolfe, 4to, published at the Office of "The Fishing Gazette", n.d. (2) Literature: Beazley, David, Images of Angling. Three Centuries of British Angling Prints, Creel Press, 2010, nos. 197-203 ⁂ Henry Leonidas Rolfe (1823-1881) was devoted to the depiction of angling subjects and was, unsurprisingly, a keen fisherman himself. Henry Leonidas Rolfe's good friend Alfred Jardine, the great Victorian pike angler, called him simply 'The Fish-Painter'. Another friend, the leading fish biologist of the day, Frank Buckland, described him as 'The Landseer of Fishes', and the artist described himself somewhat self-deprecatingly as 'The Scaly Painter'. Scarce. We can only trace one other copy being sold at auction.
