Description
Translation provided by Youdao
It is the portrait of an unknown lady in the role of a mythological figure, as the direct glance at the viewer and the contemporary hairstyle show. The lady shows herself as the garden goddess Pomona, as indicated by the sickle in her hand, the basket of fruit she points to, and the trellis with wine behind her. Behind her, the god Vertumnus approaches, transformed into the shape of an old woman. Pomona was not interested in men and denied them access to her garden. Vertumnus entered in the form of an old woman to advertise himself. When he reverts to his true form, Pomona falls in love with him. (Ovid, Metamorphoses, XIV, 622-697). Oil on canvas 87,5 x 72 cm.
