At the table, men woo young women, the man on the left very coarse, the man on the right more tactful, but also unsuccessful. Two people don't fit into this typical pub scene with common people. The strikingly red-clad man with a sword, who is drinking from his beer mug and wearing a strange red cap, is evidently a gentleman. The company does not actually correspond to his status. How and why he is in this group is left to the imagination of the beholder. Across from him sits a man dressed in black who is filling his pipe and looking directly at the viewer. He is exactly in the center of the picture and does not take part in what is happening around him. It could be a self-portrait of the artist who works for us as a silent observer.
