Henry Craven (1776-1836), the brother of the 1st Earl of Craven, who was a noted gambler. The bold zig-zag design of this box is associated with the Kodai-ji style of lacquer. See also C.Clunas, Chinese Carving, London, 1996, p.32, fig.26, for similar gaming counters dated to around 1775. A related games box is illustrated by J.Ayers, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, vol.III, London, 2016, no.2048.
