A Welcome Address from Sir Charles Aitchison welcoming Lord and Lady Dufferin on their first visit to Lahore, India, dated 5 March 1885, Persian script on paper heightened with opaque colours and gold, headers within cloud bands and on gold frames, within a repeating border of flowers and vine, dated 5 March 1885, glazed and framed, document 70 x 32cm. Sir Charles Umpherston Aitchison KCSI CIE (20 May 1832 – 18 February 1896) was a Scottish colonial administrator who was Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, then a province of British India. He served as Chief Commissioner of the British Crown Colony of Burma from March 1878 to May 1880. In 1886, Lord Dufferin appointed a "Public Service Commission" under Sir Charles Aitchison to investigate the problems of the civil services in India and to come up with a scheme for fulfilling the claims of Indians to higher and more extensive employment in public service.
