Description

Two photograph albums commemorating the Delhi Durbar of 1903, containing 56 group portraits and views of the Durbar to celebrate the Coronation of Edward VII and Alexandra, handwritten captions on the mounts, images mounted one per page, the albums with green morocco gilt covers, "Durbar India 1903" in gilt on cover, 38 x 28cm. (2) The Delhi Durbar (meaning "Court of Delhi") was an Indian imperial-style mass assembly organized by the British at Coronation Park, Delhi, India, to mark the succession of an Emperor or Empress of India. Also known as the Imperial Durbar, it was held three times, in 1877, 1903, and 1911, at the height of the British Empire. The 1903 Durbar was the held by Lord and Lady Curzon and was the most theatrical and resplendent of the three. In a few short months at the end of 1902, a deserted plain was transformed into an elaborate tented city, complete with temporary light railway to bring crowds of spectators out from Delhi, a post office with its own stamp, telephone and telegraphic facilities, a variety of stores, a Police force with specially designed uniform, hospital, magistrate's court and complex sanitation, drainage, and electric light installations. Souvenir guide books were sold and maps of the camping ground distributed. Marketing opportunities were craftily exploited. A special Delhi Durbar Medal was struck, firework displays, exhibitions and glamorous dances held Including several paper print outs comprising a paper pamphlet titled "Sermon preached on the occasion of the Solemn Worship of Almighty God in connection with the Delhi Coronation Durbar, January 1903" , "The Order of Service Sunday 4th January 1903", a programme of the "Coronation Hockey Tournament Finals, Monday 5th January, 1903", an ordinance map of the "Central Camp Coronation Durbar Delhi 1903", a "Plan of Camps Delhi Coronation Durbar 1902-1903" and a "Plan showing the Disposition of Troops and General Arrangements for the Coronation Durbar January 1st 1903."
