关公在汉传佛教中被奉为伽蓝菩萨，即寺院和守护城关的神。藏传佛教则认为他是密宗护法赤东赞的化身，道教尊之为关圣帝君，并赋予司财的职能，此种受到不同宗教崇拜的古代人物颇为少见。关公的封诰历朝不同，但有两个统一的评价，贯彻始终，那就是“勇”和“义”，这也是关公像广受崇祀的原因之一。关羽的刚正不阿，忠诚守信的优秀品质深入人心，受到历代皇朝与民间的爱戴和尊奉，其造像制作经久而不衰。
