A fine and exceptionally rare mid 19th century English giant carriage chronometer timepiece with running seconds and power reserve John Poole, 57 Fenchurch Street, London, No.4428. The gilt brass case with low shaped handle over a large bevelled glass inspection panel within a stepped frame on a boldly moulded cornice, the remaining glass panels bevelled and set between rounded columns on a stepped base and block feet, the glazed rear panel inset with a winding aperture with hinged brass cover, the signed and numbered silvered Roman dial marked 'CHRONOMETER' with large subsidiary seconds ring intersecting XI, XII and I above the power reserve dial set at VI marked DOWN and UP, with original fine blued steel matching hands, signed in a reserve 'JOHN POOLE, 57 FENCHURCH STREET, LONDON, 4428' against an engine turned background, the substantial chain fusee movement with Harrison's maintaining power, the Earnshaw type detent escapement set on a large gilt platform with engraved cock and large diamond endstone to a blued steel helical balance and Poole's typical balance with auxiliary compensation. Together with a 19th century brass winding key. Ticking 25cms (10ins) high. Footnotes: John Poole, born in 1818, recorded as working at 57 Fenchurch Street, London from circa 1845 until 1875. He was Chronometer Maker to the Admiralty.
