Description

A FINE AND RARE SECOND QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY BRASS-BOUND MAHOGANY MARINE CHRONOMETER OF ONE DAY DURATION John Roger Arnold, London, No 554 The case with protected corners, twin handles and an ivory name plaque (previously marked with the Ordnance arrow), the signed and numbered 3 inch silvered dial with outer minute track and Roman hours encircling the subsidiaries for power reserve and running seconds, with blued steel hands protected by a domed glass secured via a bayonet fitting, the signed and numbered chain fusee movement with maintaining power and freesprung cut and compensated bimetallic balance with blued steel helical spring to an Earnshaw type detent escapement, signed J R Arnold, London, Invt et Fecit No 554 and previously marked with the ordnance arrow, set in a weighted gimballed bowl with sprung winding cover and forked securing bracket, a winding key set in a bracket to the corner. Together with a mahogany travelling case with padded felt-lined interior. The case 15cms (6ins) wide. (2) 15cms (5 1/2ins) high (3) Footnotes: Supplied to the Admiralty in 1826 to HMS Beaver. The Cherokee class brig-sloop was posted in Jamaica till 1826 and its captain was John James Onslow, son of the admiral Sir Richard Onslow, 1st Baronet, who played a distinguished role at the Battle of Camperdown. Later service was aboard the following ships: 1826, HMS Clinker 1834, HMS Andromache 1852, HMS Gossamer 1861, HMS Malta In 1863 it was with Messrs Dent & Co., although 20 years later it was back in service aboard HMS Griffon.
