Julius Caesar Ibbetson, British 1759-1817- 'Bugs & Bees.'; and 'Beetles & Butterflies'; each pencil, pen and grey ink, and watercolour on paper, each titled (in the artist's border), the first inscribed 'Indignation. Del.' (in the artist's border), each 16 x 11.3 cm., a pair (2). Provenance: The Late J. Wentworth Smith; Anon. sale, Christie's, 19 March 1968, lot 154 (1,500 gns. to Sanders); The Hon. C. A. Lennox Boyd; With Spink & Son Ltd [K3 8804]. Note: Ibbetson was initially apprenticed to a ship painter in Hull where he also worked as a theatre scene painter before moving to London in 1777. A self-taught artist, he worked across Britain and frequently exhibited landscape and genre scenes at the Royal Academy. He specialised in painting fairly small landscapes with figures and animals. As watercolours, the present works are rarer examples of the artist’s oeuvre, and comprise light-hearted, humorous depictions of figures in rural England. Please refer to department for condition report. Please note the colours are more vibrant than the impression given in the images.
