Pierre Louis Bouvier, Swiss 1765-1836- Portrait of Jean-Dauphin de Chapeau Rouge; watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed, inscribed and dated 'Bouvier / fait. Ems les Bains / 1826' (centre left), with extensive inscription (on the reverse), 24.5 x 19 cm. Note: De Chapeau Rouge (1770-1827) was a German merchant and first deputy mayor of Hamburg from 1811-13. His family had lived in Geneva since the 15th Century until his father immigrated to Hamburg in 1764 and acquired citizenship there. Jean-Dauphin founded the trading company 'De Chapeaurouge & Co' with his brothers, and inherited the luxurious 'Hammer Hof' estate in the east of Hamburg, upon his father's death in 1805.
