William Lionel Wyllie RA RE, British 1851-1931- The pool of London at sunset; oil on panel, with faded inscription (on a label attached to the reverse), 21.5 x 27 cm. Provenance: With Atelier Ltd, Guernsey, where purchased in 2002. Literature: Guernsey, Atelier Ltd, Summer Catalogue, 2002, no.32. Note: The present work is unusual in the content of the artist's oeuvre, in its representation of boats docked at harbour, rather than out at sea. Wyllie studied under a number of distinguished contemporary artists, including John Everett Millais, Edwin Henry Landseer, and Frederic Leighton. He was a much celebrated maritime painter, whose works can be found in the collections of the Britannia Royal Naval College, the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich Heritage Centre, and the National Museum of the Royal Navy. Held in a gilded composition frame, some losses to the gesso and gilding. The panel itself is held in a separate gold slip which is loose with in the frame. The work has some surface dust in areas but otherwise appears to be in very good condition.
