In 1865 he was invited by Li Hongzhang to be director of the Ziyang Academy in Suzhou. A dedicated antiquarian and scholar of early scripts, Yu Yue was well-known for his Clerical script inspired by Han dynasty models. It is said he even relied on the script for his personal correspondences.晚清著名書法家、教育家俞樾天資高穎，於道光三十年（1850）考中進士，時年二十九歲，曾任河南學政。罷官後移居蘇州，在紫陽書院講學。俞樾书法工篆隶，對漢隸研究尤精，書風自成一家。
