Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Scottish 1912-2004 - Assisi (pink & green), 1955; pencil and gouache on paper, signed and dated lower left 'W. Barns-Graham 1955' and inscribed on the reverse of the frame, 41.5 x 53 cm (ARR) Provenance: private collection, purchased directly from the artist; thence by descent Note: artist's label attached to the reverse of the frame Barns-Graham studied at Edinburgh College of Art, where she was taught by William MacTaggart, and where her contemporaries included influential Scottish artists such as William Gear, Robert MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun. After moving to St Ives, Barns-Graham also became part of the artistic community there, befriending prominent artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo, Bernard Leach, Ben Nicholson, and Alfred Wallis. The present work is a great example of her output in the 1950s, which consisted largely of studies made during her European travels, with her flowing line drawings of Swiss glaciers followed by similarly striking and geometric depictions of Italy, which she visited on three occasions between 1953 and 1955. Her works are in a number of public collections, such as the Tate Britain, the V&A, and the British Museum in London, and the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh.
