Denis Mitchell was a significant member of the St Ives group. This work, an abstract exploration of form, mass and space, is typical of Mitchell’s output, and reveals the influence of contemporaries such as Barbara Hepworth, with whom he worked as an assistant for 10 years. Mitchell’s central presence in the thriving artistic scene of St Ives was cemented in 1955, when he became chairman of the Penwith Society of Arts, members of which included Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, John Wells, Bryan Wynter and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. Works by Mitchell are in collections across the globe, including the Arts Council of Great Britain, the Tate Gallery in London, the National Gallery of New South Wales in Australia, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in California, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
