A nanban lacquer small rectangular kamaboko-gata ('box in the shape of a fish sausage') coffer Momoyama period (1573-1615), late 16th/early 17th century Of conventional form, the hinged semi-cylindrical lid, body and sides decorated in gold maki-e lacquer and inlaid with shell, divided into rectangular panels separated by vertical narrow and wide bands of shippo-tsunagi (linked cash), each panel with dense decoration of different foliage or flowers among typical Nanban tendrils, the front side with paulownia and fruiting orange tachibana, the sides divided with maple and meandering kuzu (kudzu vine), the reverse with further tachibana, the lid decorated with identical floral designs that conform to those on the front, the interior of red lacquer and underside of plain black lacquer, the top of the lid applied with metal ring carrying handle, the front with an elaborate lock-plate and clasp; with a plain wood storage box. 15.5cm x 22.3cm x 13.1cm (6 1/16in x 8¾in x 5 1/8in).
